Splurge VS Save | Part 2 - Haircare & Nails

My first Splurge VS Save instalment went down pretty well: Splurge VS Save Part 1 Make-up & Skincare. It took a while to get it together and same goes for part 2. After doing my research and picking out relevant products, it's finally live! Better late than never I say! This post is all about haircare and nails, which products to save your pennies on, and the products you should loosen the purse strings for.
Shampoo - Save - Over the years a couple of different hairdressers have told me to save on shampoo and splurge on a conditioner. I also read this in a few magazines too and it does make sense. Shampoo is purely used to clean the hair whereas conditioners are the products that provide the magic. I find that any supermarket or high-street shampoo does the trick. I like TRESémme's Cleanse & Replenish for weekly use to remove product build-up and then which ever shampoo takes my fancy at the time in a store. I usually lean towards the products on offer and then choose by scent.

Conditioners - Slurge - As mentioned above, I feel a splurge on conditioners is acceptable. They are the products that transform your locks and keep them soft for days and I feel high-end brands always supply the goods. Kérastase products are amazing, the Resistance range is great for dry damaged hair and doesn't weigh it down.

Treatments - Splurge - Treatments are on the same level as conditioners, and being a weekly treat for your hair, it only makes sense that you choose ones that work wonders for your locks. Although TRESémme Keratin Smooth Treatment mask does amazing things for my hair, I can't help but say the Macadamia Deep Repair Masque wins a well-deserved first place. It makes my hair super soft, shiny and really healthy looking without weighing it down which is always tricky to find in treatments.

Serums & Oils - Splurge - Although the high-street brands do their own versions now, my hair sometimes feels a little greasy afterwards and also a little weighed down. I think it's a little obvious which two products I will be suggesting...Moroccan oil Treatment Oil is obviously the one that springs to most peoples mind, it helps smooth down fly-aways, makes dry ends feel more smooth and nourished and it also has heat protection thrown in which makes it pretty darn amazing. Another conditioning product that pretty much does the same thing as Moroccan Oil is the Macadamia Healing Oil Treatment, both work really well without making the hair greasy, flat or weighed down.

Heat Protectants - Save - Every high-street brand has their own heat protecting spray now and the ones I have used have all done wonders for my hair making it feel smoother and healthier. L'oreal Elnett Satin Styling Heat Spray comes in three different versions, for volume, curls or straight hair. I've been using the one for volume and it does just as it says, creates lovely voluminous hair all whilst protecting it from the heat of a hair dryer and curling iron, not a frizzy hair in sight. I've heard great things about the TRESémme Heat Defence Styling Spray too, next on the list to try.

Stylers - Save - I think it's obvious which product dupe I will be bringing up in this section. All brands have a variety of different products that boast to do certain things to your hair and for me I find texturizing sprays the trickiest to get right. Everyone and their cat has heard about the Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray, apparently it's an amazing Holy Grail product, I say ridiculously expensive...but still want to see what the fuss is about! Save your pennies and buy the drug-store "dupe" version in the form of Charles Worthington Texturizing Spray. I use this stuff nearly everyday and it is a-mazing!

Base/Top Coat - Optional - I've put this item as optional as I know lots of people love Seche Vite however I've also heard amazing things about the Revlon Top Coat as well so it's really personal preference. I've never tried either as I use my nail strengthener as a top coat too however I keep meaning to pick the Revlon one up. Base coats are the same as top coats, personal preference. I have been using the OPI Start to Finish which is a base coat, top coat and strengthener in one but I personally only think it works as a base coat. I also like to use a strengthener as a base coat instead which is why I've put this as optional too.

Nail Treatments/Strengthener Splurge - I 100% think you should splash out on a nail strengthener. I tried the Sally Hansen treatments and they just didn't work for me. I love the OPI Original Nail Envy, it really helps strengthen the nails and make them grow longer and stronger and I will never go back, I pray they won't ever discontinue the product, I'd actually cry.

Nail Colours - Optional - I keep changing my mind about which category this should be but I have to go with optional being the most suitable. I love my Barry M polishes, huge shade variety and lots of different finishes with great staying power, they are a brilliant brand however I can't help but think of my beloved Essie shades too and how much I love saving to splash out and buy them on 3 for 2 when I can. I also have a longing to try Chanel and Tom Ford shades as a treat once in a while so it's safe to say, which ever shade you want, you should get.

Nail Care Save - Although the Dior Nail Apricot Cream has amazing reviews behind it (and a longing to be tested by me) Burt's Bee's Lemon Butter Cuticle Cream works amazingly well (I've been told and therefore ordered my own to test it out) and for a third of the price. As long as your nails and cuticles feel soft and smooth and easy to work with, it doesn't matter which brand the product has come from.

That's it for my Splurge VS Save posts. I really hope you've enjoyed them and found them helpful. I've had fun writing them and researching all the products. If you have tried any of the products mentioned, I'd love to hear your thoughts on them and if they are worth their hype.

Leave links below of any reviews you've written of the products above, I'd love to read them.

Avéne Soothing Hydrating Serum | Review

Avéne is a brand that I have really fallen in love with. After trying some of their products through a "Try before you by" scheme (blog post about that here) I knew that I wanted to try more of their products properly. I have five of their products in full size now and when I saw a tweet from Escentual asking if any bloggers would like to try the Avéne Soothing Hydrating Serum* I responded straight away. A quick note on the packaging, it comes in a lovely frosted glass bottle with a pump for easily dispensing, it's compact and small and also it is glass, it's not too heavy to carry around. *Thumbs up*

You apply serums before your chosen moisturiser as they are made to work at the base layers of the skin by helping to treat the new cells. They also help boost the benefits of your skincare. As written about in my first instalment of Splurge VS Save, splurging more on a serum is more beneficial than splurging on a moisturiser. £17.00 isn't a huge splurge compared to some prices however the ingredients are what make this serum worth trying.

Avéne Soothing Hydrating Serum actually contains their amazing Avéne Thermal Spring Water which creates an instant calming effect for skin, and mixed in with some Glycerine for hydrating properties and comfort, you really are set up for smooth soft skin. Now after all my rambling, does this serum work? And does it help my skin?

I never really thought my skin suffered from redness, silly I know but until I started using Avéne products properly, it was only then that I noticed my skin looked more calm. I've been using this product for 2 weeks morning and night without fail and I have really noticed a difference. After removing my make-up fully, I start by spraying the Avéne Thermal Spring Water all over my face, let it settle and then pat it into my skin. I then apply a pumps worth of this serum all over my face and neck and it soaks into the skin almost instantly leaving it soft and supple without any tightness what so ever. I then just apply my Garnier Moisture Match moisturiser and my skin hasn't felt better. I have less redness now, less dry patches and I have to say, my skin really hasn't broken out too crazily either. It definitely doesn't clog my pores up either and although it's quite a thin consistency, it doesn't slip around everywhere causing a greasy mess.

Not only does this product work wonders, it's also paraben free and hypo-allergenic which makes it great for sensitive skin sufferers and also dry skin types, perfect for me! I now have quite a set morning and evening skincare routine with a couple of Avéne products here and there, I think they are a great brand and really know what they are doing with their skincare products.

At the moment Escentual have up to a 1/3 off their French Pharmacy brands till the end of March placing this product at £12.75 instead of £17.00 a pretty good chance to give a great product a whirl. *Leans in to whisper* Also Buy One Get One Free on Bioderma! I did a recent collective haul post too which shows you some other bits I picked up from Escental, too good of an opportunity to pass up I say!

Have you tried this serum? What are your thoughts on Avéne products?

Collective Beauty Haul

I haven't done a huge beauty haul post in quite a while. I picked these bits up over the last two weeks, shocking I know, and thought I would do a haul post for you all. I love hauls, probably because I'm nosey but reading other people's hauls always introduces me to knew releases or deals that I hadn't been aware of beforehand. If there's anything in particular that you would like to read a full review on, just let me know below.

Starting off, Escentual had a buy one get one free offer on their Bioderma and after nearly finishing my first bottle and absolutely loving it, I had to get more whilst the deal was on. At the moment they also have a third off all French pharmacy products so I took this as a sign to finally pick up the Nuxe Réve De Miel lip balm and threw in the A-Derma Skincare Cream for good measure. It's a creamy milk that can be used for dry skin on both the face and body and sounds lovely.

I've had a little bit of dryness on my nose recently and have wanted to try the Clinique Moisture Surge Mask for a while now and after noticing lots of redness on my cheeks recently, I took to google and researched the best product for it. I discovered the Clinique Redness Solutions base which is a green tinted primer and so far I am impressed. Another Clinique product I have been meaning to try is the Cleansing Balm. Ever since I read about it over at Beth Blogs Beauty I have been meaning to pick it up.

I previously had my Clarisonic Mia in my blog sale however since no one wanted it, I took it as a sign to keep it and finally replaced the brush head. I picked up the deep pore one as I find that works best for me. I wanted to try a new eye make-up remover, even though Bioderma does do the job perfectly fine, I still like to use a separate product and found the new Garnier Express 2-in-1 Eye Make-up Remover from Asda and so far I really like it.

Last but not least I decided to finally try the Ole Henriksen Truth to Go wipes as I've heard so much hype surrounding them. I only picked up the travel size pack of 10 to start with as they were on a special deal from Beauty Bay

Moving onto make-up, first up had to be the new Barry M spring gelly nail paints, it took a very long time to track all three shades down but I finally managed too. Huckleberry, Rose Hip and Sugar Apple are all perfect for Spring and look amazing on the nails and since Superdrug where holding a 2 for £6.00 offer, I finally added a red to my collection which is called Blood Orange.

Another nail polish I bought from Beauty Bay was Shell-O by China Glaze. I've been after a bright neon coral for a while now and since it was on offer, I added it to my Beauty Bay basket along with the wipes. It's a beautiful shade and I can't wait to wear it this Summer, it' so bright!

YSL Touché Éclat foundation has been on my high-end wishlist for so long, ever since it came out and when I discovered I had £5.00 on my Debenhams card, it would've been rude not too really wouldn't it? I've used this three times now and it is pretty darn good...review coming soon.

Last but not certainly not least, I just had to finally get my hands on one of the new Hourglass Ambient Lighting blushers. I was ordering one for my recent giveaway winner and picked the same shade, Diffused Heat up for myself too, it's a stunning blusher and so soft to apply. Instead of paying £5.00 for postage, I found this beautiful By Terry eyeshadow in the shade Café Noir for £5.50 on Space.NK which brought my basket over the amount that qualified for free delivery, so I bagged myself an eyeshadow and only paying 50p more, bonus!

I know it's a ridiculous amount to spend on myself in a short space but I haven't gone this crazy in a long time. I've just ordered a little haul of organic products which I will write about when it arrives but now I have a lot of testing and reviewing to do and have put myself on an unoffical spending ban...who want's to bet how long that will last?

Which products have you picked up recently? Have you tried anything from this haul?

YSL Rouge Volupté - 32 Corail Jalouse | Review & Swatches

I have wanted to try a YSL Rouge Volupté lipstick since I started blogging, everything about them just screams sophisticated and pretty, I mean just look at the packaging! I was lucky enough to receive this one from Brent for Christmas, it took me a while to decide which shade as I kept changing my mind, at the counter I had actually chosen a different shade and whilst the lady was getting it from the drawer, I saw this one, Corail Jalouse and changed my mind, again.

Corail Jalouse 32 is from the S/S14 line and they had only just received their stock in that day so I was super happy to snap one up. It's such a gorgeous peachy coral shade that doesn't contain any shimmer as shimmer really puts me of lip products.

Another touch at the packaging, they feel and look so luxurious wrapped in a gold case and I love how the shade is represented on the outside. If you have more than one, it will make finding the shade you're after a lot easier. They feel nice and sturdy and look great when you need to whip it out for touch ups.

Whenever I use this lipstick, I still can't get over how smooth and soft it feels to apply, it doesn't drag on the lips at all. One thing I did notice however when I first used it was that it sat in dry patches, so make sure you buff your lips first with a lip scrub and apply a good lip balm afterwards. I do that now and it sits absolutely fine that way. I sometimes dab the lip colour on using my finger which creates a pretty sheer tint, otherwise the colour can easily be built up for a more bold bright colour. It's very glossy and doesn't make my lips feel dry which is a bonus. The picture above of the colour on my lips is a light application and I love the soft subtle colour it leaves.

What impressed me most about this lipstick is how long it lasts. I've worn it out when I've been drinking and eating and it doesn't budge, I expect it to be gone and so I get it out to re-apply only to discover that the colour is still on my lips and looks absolutely fine! It's amazing.

I absolutely love this lipstick and can't wait to wear it lots in the Spring/Summer time. The smooth silky texture is perfect for my sometimes dry lips and the pigmentation is just amazing. I can't wait to experiment and try some more shades, I'm feeling a nude/pink and a bright pink next.

Have you used a Rouge Volupté lipstick before? Which shades would you recommend?

A Little Lush Haul

Yesterday I had to make a mad dash to Lakeside to visit an Apple store as my iPhone decided it was going to mess me about, luckily it's all sorted now but whilst I was there, I decided to visit one of my favourite shops, Lush. I don't have a Lush near me, sadly it closed down a few years ago so the nearest store is about 45 minutes drive. I usually go a bit crazy and pick up loads but I stuck to three and decide to chose some that I haven't used before.

Brightside £4.50 | link - This is a bubble bar and the bright orange, red and yellow pattern really got my attention. When I smelt it I just had to buy it, it smells incredible! It's made of three citrus oils, mandarin, tangerine and bergamot. It's so refreshing and orangey, it's lovely. Perfect in a Spring morning bath to help you feel fresh and awake. This is one the most expensive products I have bought from Lush however, it's huge and will easily last me 4-5 baths.

Blackberry £2.95 | link - Blackberry is a very large bath bomb and again, smells of bergamot. It's supposed to help wash away any stress or anxiety that you may be feeling and help you to relax. I didn't know that at the time of purchasing, I purely bought it for the scent. It's said to have the same scent as the Sultana of Soap which I haven't actually used but want to now!

Fluffy Egg £2.95 | link - Another bath bomb, this is the only Easter product I wanted to try. I knew before picking it up that it had one of Lush's most popular scents, the same as Snow Fairy and Creamy Candy bubble bar. I love this scent so much, it's very sweet and smells just like a sweet shop. I just thought it looked really cute in the egg shape with the little flower on the front and back and can't wait to use it.

What have you picked up from Lush recently? Have you tried any of the above?

Perricone MD - Intensive Pore Minimizer | Review

Like everyone I am very dubious when it comes to products that boost to minimize pores or help them appear smaller. Products I have used in the past never seem to work for me, especially primers, they just don't do anything they say they do. When I was asked if I would like to try the Perricone MD Intensive Pore Minimizer* I did a little research on the product and saw that it has a lot of good reviews so I said yes straight away as I wanted to put it to the test myself.

Nicolas Perricone MD is a certified dermatologist and his Intensive Pore Minimizer claims to strengthen pore walls, reduce pore size, help with the build up of oils and firm the appearance of skin. Having read the oil part, I was then worried that it would make my dry skin worse however once it arrived, I read on the box that it's suitable for all skin types. I have now used this product twice a day for a month, morning and night and now only have about a quarter of the product left.

A quick note on the packaging, the box was damaged when it arrived, completely crushed actually so I didn't want to photograph it however I have to say the bottle of this is rather high-end and classy looking. The brown frosted glass and plain simple label really screams 1800's pharmaceutical product to me, I love it.

So does this formula actually work for the skin? Yes and no. I haven't noticed any change in the firmness of my skin. This may have something to do with the fact that I'm only 23 and hopefully won't be seeing any fine lines for at least another 10 years - a girl can dream - so I can't really judge it on that benefit. The ingredient Alpha Lipoic Acid is supposed to help regulate sebum production which means excess oils, having dry skin I also didn't notice a difference in that as I need oils however I can say it didn't dry my skin out at all which was great.

You have to shake the bottle really well before using it as the ingredients separate within the bottle and they need to be mixed well before use. After doing this I would then apply the solution onto a cotton pad and apply it to my face, making sure that I concentrate on my T-zone. After using it, my skin instantly feels smooth and soft and surprisingly doesn't feel tight. I then carry on with my normal skincare by applying a serum and moisturiser straight after.

I have to say I have noticed that some of my pores are less noticeable now. They haven't disappeared completely and I doubt they ever will but I can definitely see a difference. Certain foundations used to sometimes sit in them and I'd have to keep an eye out all day but since using this solution I haven't had a problem with that. My skin feels extra fresh when I use this, it feels as though I have removed every last bit of make-up/dirt from throughout the day and it feels great.

The bottle contains 118ml of product which is a decent amount however since using it day and night as I mentioned above, I only have less than a quarter left now so it really doesn't last very long at all, and for £49.50 it's a very pricey product to replace every two months. I would recommend it however as I feel it worked well for me but I don't know if I will buy this once I run out, the price is putting me off.

Have you used this product or anything else from the Perricone MD range? What were your thoughts?

OPI Start To Finish | Review

A while ago I ran out of my trusty OPI Nail Envy and couldn't get hold of it for a while so decided to give a new product a try instead. I decided to give the OPI Start to Finish a try and even though I'd never heard anything about this and hadn't read any reviews I thought I would go ahead with it anyway.

OPI Start to Finish contains a base coat, top coat and also a strengthener as well. It all sounds a little too good to be true and I would be lying if I said I believed it would do wonders. I used this every time I painted my nails, I applied it as a base and then as a top coat as well and have now nearly finished the whole bottle.

First impressions I noticed that my nail polish did last a little longer, it maybe added a day to my manicure, however once a chip appeared, that would be it, it would just peel off in one which isn't very good. I did however notice that this did leave my nails looking incredibly shiny and glossy which I loved!

Strengthener wise I feel it doesn't do anything at all to my nails. After using Nail Envy for two years straight I can honestly say that it did wonders for my nails, it made them so strong and really helped them grow however since using this one, my nails have gone backwards, peeling, chipping, breaking you name it, it happens to mine now.

I have now purchased another Nail Envy in order to get my nails back to how they used to be. If you are in the market for a nail strengthener or even a base/top coat I would steer clear of the OPI Start to Finish, I just don't feel it really does anything that it suggests. Keep your paws looking pretty and stick to the Nail Envy and Seche Vite top coat.

Have you used this product? Which nail strengthener do you prefer?

Tropical Wings Zoo

Yesterday was such a beautiful day in the south east that it would have been silly to have stayed indoors. I don't know about you but when the sun shines I don't want to sit on a beach, I want to go exploring or for long walks. I love hiking and climbing and doing different activities so when Brent suggested going to Tropical Wings Zoo I was all for it. Tropical Wings is mainly a zoo featuring different speicies of tropical butterflies and birds from all over the world and they now have other animals too such as wallaby's, goat's and meerkat's, my favourite, they are so cute and funny to watch. I took this little outing as a chance to snap some pretty pictures on my camera and also an outfit of the day post.

I love the picture of the meerkat sunbathing, being the weirdo that I am, I decided to name him Terence haha but on a serious note, he actually is sunbathing, they sit like this to warm up their organs in order to be able to hunt for longer, and probably because they know they look cute (haha). I also love the flower picture above, I don't know what the name of this flower is but it's so pretty.

The picture of the blue butterfly is probably my favourite, my mum and I spent ages trying to run around chasing them to get a shot but once they settle on a leaf, they generally tend to close their wings but I managed to get this one with the gorgeous blue peeking through. It's called a Blue Morpho and it's from South America and it's such a beautiful bright vibrant blue shade, I wish I had a nail polish like it!

I hope you enjoyed this little post, it's very different from what I normally write about but I wanted to share with you more lifestyle activities that I get up too. Brent and I are hoping to go to London next month for the day, Tower of London, some museums and London Dungeons if we can so I will write about that as well.

What did you get up to this weekend?

Tropical Wings Zoo - Outfit

Dress - Primark | Leggings - H&M | Shoes - Matalan | Aviators - Michael Kors | Bag - Fiorelli

Today was such a beautiful day that Brent, my sister, mum and I all spontaneously decided to go to Tropical Wings Zoo and decided I wanted to do an outfit post for you featuring my new bargain dress. I will be writing a post about our day tomorrow as I managed to snap some lovely butterfly pictures whilst I was there.

I bought my dress from Primark a couple of weeks ago now for the bargain price of £8.00, it's a gorgeous purple floral pattern in silk material. Apart from making my hair go static after putting it on and taking it off it's a gorgeous light dress and have worn it out for drinks and to a zoo so I'd say it's pretty versatile!

My bag is from Fiorelli, it's the Kenzie Tote and I am very much in love with it! As much as I love my Zara City Office bag it just isn't practical as I can't even fit a bottle of water into it so this one is perfect as it's all open inside, has a zip for closure and it's so roomy. It was rather pricey for me however I find the more you spend, the longer they last.

I had a lovely day out today, I haven't been to Tropical Wings Zoo in about 8 years so it was nice to go back as they have more animals there now and don't forget to keep an eye out for my post all about it.

What did you get up to this weekend?

Worth The Hype?

I haven't really come across a whole lot of disappointing products during my beauty crazed fad which is a good thing, however recently I have been left a little underwhelmed by the following and just wanted to share my opinions on them and see whether you think these products are worth the hype. I think all of these products are very well loved in general and I feel a bit of a traitor because I feel I should like them more but I just can't get passed the slight disappointment that I have for them.

First up is Rimmel Wake Me Up foundation, I know everyone including Tanya Burr raves about this and if she likes it I must like it too right? Well no, not this time unfortunately, I didn't realise it was quite as sparkly as it is. When I first used it I wore it to work, did my make-up, got in the car and looked in the mirror and...well I'll let you guess the word that came out my mouth because I looked like a disco ball and all day long I felt as though everyone was looking at my sparkly face. I will never wear this to work again however I liked the coverage and therefore will use it for at home or for when I'm not doing a lot.

Next is the cult product Liz Earle Cleanse & Polish, this isn't a total disappointment really, I just use it differently to everyone else. You're supposed to use it on a face full of make-up and let the the product dissolve it all and then wipe it off with a muslin cloth, I bought this bottle in a blog sale so I didn't get a cloth with it so I used one I already had - Gemma sent me another bottle with the proper cloth so I will see how it works then, thank you Gem! I have to say, applying a cream cleanser to a face full of make-up is slightly absurd and takes some getting used to however I found it didn't remove my eye make-up very well at all, or my face make-up for that matter and my skin didn't feel too great afterwards. I also really dislike the eucalyptus scent, I feel as though I'm applying Olbas Oil to my face. Saying that, I have found that using it at the very end of my shower does leave my face incredibly soft, I think it's because the hot water and steam has opened my pores and once I use it, my face is thoroughly cleansed so I do like it in that sense, plus in the shower the scent isn't as strong either.

Finally, I have wanted to try the Yes to Cucumber face wipes for a long time now and when I saw them in Waitrose at 25% off I decided it was time to give them a try. They are described as soothing as they contain aloe vera and are supposed to be good at removing make-up too. I must say they do remove make-up really well and the towlettes are quite strong which is good as they don't fall apart however they cause my skin to go bright red and sting which I know isn't a good sign at all. Although they are supposed to be soothing, they really didn't work for me however I still want to try their Yes to Carrots range.

It's a shame I didn't love these products as much as everyone else, I will keep using the Liz Earle Cleanse & Polish in the shower as I found it works incredibly well for me like that, I have another hot cloth cleanser that works wonders for me normally which I will be reviewing soon for you all.

Have you tried any of these products? Do you think they are worth the hype?

Lush Haagenbath Bath Bomb | Review

I picked up the Haagenbath bath bomb and mentioned it in my Boxing Day Sales haul and have just realised this particular bath bomb is only available online or in their Poole store. I used this one the other day and having a retro pink bath tub can be annoying as it means I can't take accurate pictures of the colours in the water however whenever I'm staying at my Nan's, I take full advantage of her white tub, so I apologise for no water pictures in this post.

Haagenbath is one of the larger sized bath bombs and has tiny pieces of luxury chocolate bath melt and shavings of cocoa butter in the mix. It smells strongly of chocolate mint and although I don't like the flavour of chocolate mint, the smell is amazing and was so nice to have in the bath. It took a good 10 minutes to fizz away which is nice as some of their bath bombs are finished within a couple of minutes.

As it fizzed, it created a foamy white bath and looked really pretty and the water had a silky texture to it which left my skin feeling very moisturised and soft. The scent lingered in the air when I put it in the water but it wasn't as strong which didn't bother me as the faint armour was lovely and relaxing. I really enjoyed using this bath bomb and will definitely be buying it again in the future. I realised that this is the same bath bomb as their limited addition Christmas Fairy which came out at Christmas, both were lovely to use.
Have you tried the Haaggenbath bath bomb? What did you think of it?

I recently hit 500 followers on both GFC and Bloglovin' and to day "Thank you" I am holding a little Giveaway for you all! It's international as well :) Good luck!
